Can a Locksmith Replace a Key Without the Original?
Yes, for the majority of vehicles. The blade is cut from the key code held against the vehicle or by decoding one of its locks, then the new key is paired to the immobiliser through the diagnostic port. A minority of makes and newer models still restrict this to the franchised dealer network.
Where the cutting information comes from
Manufacturers record a key code against each vehicle. Where that is available, the blade can be cut directly to it. Where it is not, a lock can be decoded to read the pattern instead. Either route produces a blade that turns the barrels correctly.
The electronic half
Cutting alone will not start the car. The new key has to be introduced to the immobiliser, which on many makes involves a security procedure controlled by the vehicle itself. This is why proof of ownership is always requested.
When the answer is no
Some recent premium models, and a handful of specific systems, cannot be keyed by an independent locksmith. Checking the registration first avoids a wasted trip for everyone.
