Remote Key vs Smart Key — What's the Difference?
A remote key needs a button press to lock or unlock and a blade turned in the ignition, or inserted, to start. A smart or proximity key is detected by the car when it is nearby, unlocking on a door handle touch and starting with a button while the key stays in a pocket.
Why the difference matters
Smart keys communicate with the vehicle continuously and carry more security around how new ones are added. That usually makes them a longer job and a more expensive part than a conventional remote key.
The hidden blade
Nearly every smart key contains a small mechanical blade, and the vehicle has a keyhole hidden behind a cap on the driver's door. Worth knowing before assuming a flat key battery means a locked-out afternoon.
